Measurement instruments

I am not eager to measure my audio equipment. Though I measure minimum data in order to find out mistakes I may make in design or construction, I don't keep most of the measured data. My instruments are not so precise that the data are unreliable to compare my equipment with others.
My instruments are:

* Circuit simulator: Linear Technology LTspice IV
A free SPICE simulator offered by a semiconductor maker, Linear Technology.
* Digital multimeter: SOAR 3430 (14/06/01revised) {It was replaced with SANWA PC710 in Feb. 2014}
SOAR 3430I bought a new portable digital multimeter, SANWA PC710, because SOAR 3430, which I had been using since I was a novice engineer in 1985, came to the end of its life. I bought PC710 for 19,000 JPY (US$190). It is more expensive than 3430 (I remember its price was about 13,000 JPY). PC710's functions and accuracy are not so different from 3430, except it has a feature to communicate with PC. I was impressed by 3430 again, What an advanced measurement instrument 3430 was! (the photo shows SOAR 3430) SOAR was a Japanese measurement instrument manufacturer. Its high price/performance products were very popular worldwide in mid 1980s, but it went bankrupt before I was aware.
* Oscillator: KENWOOD AG-203D
A budget oscillator which produces sine and square waves. Distortion is so low for its low price. The frequency range is 10Hz-1MHz.
* Digital oscilloscope: Pico Technology PicoScope 4262 (14/10/06 added) {It replaced Pico Technology ADC-216 in May 2012}
A 10Ms/s, 16-bit digital oscilloscope which has many useful features like FFT analyzer, voltmeter, frequency counter and oscillator.
* Analog oscilloscope: Kikusui Electronics COS5100
A 2-channel, 100MHz analog oscilloscope I bought for faultfinding of digital circuits in 1983. It hasn't been calibrated since 1983.
* Acoustic measurement tool: Phonic PAA3 (2016/07/28 added)
Handheld acoustic measurement tool with 31-band real-time spectrum analyzer and built-in calibrated measurement microphone. It is so handy for measurements of loudspeakers and room acoustics. It is designed for professional use, though, it is useful for DIY constructors too, because of its reasonable price (I bought it for 43,800 JPY). The enclosed CD contains APP and WAV files used in measurement (sine wave, pink noise, etc). By using the APP, you can control PAA3 from PC, see measurement data on PC display and save the data in HD of PC.

PC-based Audio

From 2004 through 2014, I tried a PC-based audio system and evaluated it in my way. As I did that in my spare time, my evaluation is not so perfect, though, I got a knowledge about PC-based audio in a way. Here, I'll show my experience and comment about it. [read more]

I introduce PC APPs I used for design and measurement of audio equipment.

* Schematic CAD: CADLUS Circuit (NSC)
Free schematic CAD offered by, a PCB maker. Compared with OrCAD, it is not easy to use. It takes relatively long time to design even a small circuit.
Where to get:
* Schematic & PCB CAD: PCBWeb Designer (Silicon Framework)
Free schematic & PCB CAD offered by an electronic parts retailer, Digi-key Electronics. It automatically downloads data of each part from Digi-key and manufacturers' websites. This feature is so handy. However, its part library doesn't include some of the parts registered in the Digi-key website. In that case, you have to add the parts to the library manually. It includes a feature that creates BOM (bill of materials) for practical use. As of July 2016, I haven't used it as PCB CAD. So I don't know how usable it is as PCB CAD yet.
Where to get:
* Circuit simulator: LTspice IV (Linear Technology)
Free SPICE simulator offered by a semiconductor manufacturer, Linear Technology. It requires LTspice models, though alomost all the electronic component manufacturers provide PSpice models. It's a catch. I'm looking for another free circuit simulator.
Where to get:
Free PCB CAD offered by Its manual is not so good that. The user interface is not good either. The large number of components are registered in its library, but few audio components. You need to register audio parts by yourself.
Where to get:
* Music file edit & replay: AudioGate 4 (Korg)
Free music file edit & player APP offered by a music instruments manufacturer Korg. MP3, PCM, DSD are supported. The maximum bit rate of PCM is 192kHz/24bit, 5.6MHz for DSD. It supports almost all formats of music files. High definition audio system is easily created with this APP and Korg's USB DAC.
Where to get:
* Acoustic measurement: PAA3 (Phonic)
Accessary APP for Phonic PAA3. It functions as a remote of PAA3. Measurement data can be viewed on PC screen and saved in PC as a file.
